1. what we collect
When you use melt, we collect:
- Game answers — your responses to game questions, stored in our database linked to your game session
- Gender — if you choose to provide it (optional "prefer not to say" available)
- Email address — only if you voluntarily provide it for notifications
- Session data — a unique session ID and share code to link partners' answers
- For would you ever — a first name you choose, your answers to its 12 questions, and keys that open your board or your result (we store only a hash of each key)
We do not collect: your full name (would you ever asks for a first name, which people who play the same link can see), phone number, location, IP address for identification purposes, or any other personally identifying information.
2. how we use your data
- To match your answers with your partner's and display results
- To show aggregate statistics ("68% of people chose the same")
- To send you the emails described in section 6, if you provided your email
- To display relevant product recommendations based on your answers
- To improve the Service (aggregate, anonymized analysis only)
- In would you ever: to show each player the questions they and the link's creator both said yes to; to show everyone who played a link a ranking of first names and match counts; and to show the creator a board of who played
3. answer privacy — the core promise
Your non-matching answers are never shown to your partner. This is the fundamental privacy guarantee of the Service. Only answers where both partners chose the same option are revealed.
However, please be aware that it may be possible for a partner to infer some non-matching answers through logical deduction based on which questions matched and which did not.
In would you everthe rule is stricter, because one link can be played by many people: only questions where both of you said yes are listed. Where one of you said yes and the other maybe, the other person sees a number, not which questions. A no, or a maybe on its own, is never shown to anyone — not to the creator, not to other players. Match counts and the ranking can still let people draw some conclusions.
4. data storage and security
- Game data is stored on Supabase (hosted on AWS) with encryption at rest
- No user accounts are created — all data is linked to anonymous session IDs
- Your answers are read only by our server — another person’s raw answers are never sent to your browser, only the matches you share
- We use HTTPS for all data transmission
- To limit abuse, when you start a game, make or play a would you ever link, or submit an email we keep a salted hash of your network address (never the address itself) for up to 24 hours
- We do not sell your data to third parties
5. sensitive data
We recognize that answers to intimate questions constitute sensitive personal data. We treat all game answers with the highest level of care. This data is:
- Never shared with third parties in identifiable form
- Never used for advertising targeting
- Only used in aggregate, anonymized form for statistics and product improvement
- Accessible only to essential service infrastructure
6. email communications
If you provide your email, here is everything we send:
- Your game links, straight away — your partner’s invite link and your private results link, so you can close the page without losing the game
- One notification when your partner finishes, with the link to your results
- Updates about melt premium and early access — only if you joined the waitlist on the results page
- would you ever — if you ask to be told when people play your link: a confirmation with your board link, one email when the first person plays, then at most one summary every six hours. They contain first names and counts, never answers
We never put your answers in an email — only links. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and once you use it we will not email that address again. You can also write to hello@trymelt.me.
7. cookies and tracking
We use cookies for essential functionality (session management) and analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the Service — this includes page views, traffic sources, device types, and general usage patterns. Google Analytics may set cookies on your browser. We do not use advertising cookies or retargeting. We also store a small list of your recent games in your browser's local storage — just the game id and share code, never your answers — so you can get back to a game after closing the tab. You can remove it any time with “forget my games on this device” on the game screen, or by clearing your browser data.
For would you ever we also keep, on your device only: the links you made, with the key that opens their board; the links you played, with a key that shows your result; your last first name; your answers by question, so another link with the same questions plays in one tap; and a random device id that stops one phone playing the same link twice (our server keeps it only as a hash that differs for every link). “forget would you ever on this device” on the would you ever page clears all of it.
You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
8. affiliate links
Product recommendations contain affiliate links. When you click these links, the destination website may collect its own data according to its own privacy policy. We do not control third-party websites' data practices.
9. data retention
Game session data is retained for service functionality and aggregate analysis. If you wish to have your session data deleted, contact us with your session ID or share code and we will remove it within 30 days.
would you ever links and plays are kept until the creator deletes the link from their board, which wipes names, answers and email at once and keeps only an anonymous record that a link and its plays existed. A player can remove their own play at any time from their result screen.
10. your rights
You have the right to:
- Request access to your data
- Request deletion of your data
- Withdraw consent for email communications
- Ask questions about how your data is used
- Delete your would you ever link or play yourself, any time, from your board or your result screen
11. children's privacy
The Service is strictly for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected data from a minor, we will delete it immediately. would you ever has no age check because its questions are not sexual, but the same 18+ rule applies to it.
12. changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will indicate the date of the latest update at the top of this page.
